Dr Sternberg was named a Detroit Top doc in 2012, 2013, and 2014. In 2013, he left the Henry Ford Medical Group to fulfill a lifelong ambition and form his own private clinical practice.
Dr Sternberg specializes in minimally invasive chest surgery. He has a specific interest in lung nodules and lung cancer. He is also interested in foregut surgery including esophageal cancer , para-esophageal hernias, and other foregut conditions.
In 2012, Dr Sternberg formed and still runs a lung cancer support group which assists lung cancer patients as well as their caregivers. Dr Sternberg firmly believes in a comprehensive multi-disciplinary approach to cancer that is patient centered, compassionate, and very user friendly for the patient as well as their families.
Dr Sternberg is always available to see patients and has offices in Farmington Hills, and Rochester Hills.
David Sternberg was born and raised in the New York metropolitan area. Dr. Sternberg completed his medical education at New York University School of Medicine where he graduated with honors in biomedical research. Dr. Sternberg then completed general surgical residency at Columbia University Medical Center.
During his first few years as a resident he became interested in pulmonary reperfusion injury after lung transplantation. He then completed an NIH sponsored 2 year research fellowship in pulmonary reperfusion injury at Columbia University that resulted in 2 major first author publications. The first focused on the presence of circulating activated platelet-leukocyte complexes after clinical lung transplantation. The second utilized a murine model of pulmonary reperfusion injury that Dr Sternberg developed and utilized to demonstrate the importance of the receptor for glycated end products in the protein circuits that govern the pulmonary reperfusion injury process. During this time Dr Sternberg also worked as a clinical coordinator and recovery surgeon for the cardiac and lung transplant programs at Columbia.
After completing his senior residency at Columbia, Dr Sternberg then completed a Cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Cornell University Medical Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Dr Sternberg completed a cardiothoracic track and also perfomed an additional 6 months of thoracic training in minimally invasive thoracic surgery as well as lung transplantation.
Dr Sternberg completed his board certification in both General and Cardio-thoracic Surgery and became an attending thoracic surgeon at Henry Ford Medical Group as well as the associate surgical director of the Lung Transplant program in 2010.
